You will need a combination of the following coverages:
Commercial Auto Liability
This coverage is essential and is designed to pay for injuries and damages caused by your negligence, such as the cost of repairs to another vehicle or compensating a pedestrian or the driver of another vehicle for pain and suffering. As a towing company operator, the liability limits you are required to carry will depend on the weight rating of your vehicles. Generally, for vehicles weighing under 10,000 pounds, the minimum liability limit is $300,000. For vehicles in excess of 10,000 pounds, the minimum increases to $750,000. However, when you are involved in contract work for private companies or government entities, the requirement may be $1 million or higher.
Towing companies operating locally and not crossing state lines are likely required to obtain state permits and/or filings, such as Form E, or a state DMV certificate of insurance. For towing operators working across state lines, filings like BMC-91 and endorsements such as MCS-90 are typically required.
Please note that regulations and requirements may change, so it is advisable to consult with an insurance professional to ensure that your towing company is compliant with the most current laws and regulations.
Physical Damage
There two types of coverage normally offered and purchased:
Collision Coverage – pays for damages to your truck caused in a motor vehicle accident (regardless of fault).
Comprehensive Coverage – pays for damage to your vehicle caused by other than collision incidents, such as fire, vandalism, falling objects and theft.
When you purchase physical damage coverage, carefully consider your vehicle’s condition, modifications, and research its market value, so our agents can help you purchase proper limits of coverage.
On Hook Towing
This specialized insurance provides coverage for damages to vehicles not owned by the towing company while they are being towed or attached to the tow truck. On-Hook Towing Insurance covers the cost of repairs or replacement if a customer’s vehicle incurs damage solely while it’s hooked to the tow truck.
Garage Keeper Legal Liability
This coverage offers protection for customer vehicles while they are in your care, custody, and control at your facility. Typically, claims under this coverage include damages resulting from theft, vandalism, fire, or weather-related incidents.
General Liability
This coverage protects you from claims arising from injuries and property damage inflicted on third parties due to activities not directly associated with operating the tow truck. This includes instances such as a customer slipping and falling at your premises, or negligent actions by your driver within the scope of your operations (excluding motor vehicle accidents).
Underinsured Motorist
This coverage pays you for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident caused by negligence of an underinsured party. An underinsured party is someone who has auto liability limits that are lower than the value of your claim.
Uninsured Motorist
This coverage pays you for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident caused by negligence of an uninsured party.
Medical Expenses (Personal Injury Protection)
Depending on the state, this coverage may cover your and/or pedestrian’s medical expenses incurred due to motor vehicle accidents.
